4、ustry still searching for its footing after years of macroeconomic and geopolitical issues.As companies continue to face economic uncertainty and workforce challenges,we find them shifting their priorities to overcome these headwinds,depending upon company size.We believe the results of these condit

12、uring companies the world over.And while a global pandemic and war in Europe have caused plenty of problems,climate change presents the biggest ongoing challenge of all.Its not a new issue,which is why sustainability has long been a topic of concern in the manufacturing industry.And its also why,in

13、a post-pandemic world,many companies are re-focusing on creating more sustainable businesses,but progress in the industry has been slow.Today,even as companies see the need for more sustainable practices,many are unsure how to build a more sustainable business,and are constrained by economic forces

14、that prevent implementation of environmentally-friendly solutions.Theres no single solution to these problems,but a combination of executive commitment to sustainability,a practical plan focused on increasing efficiency that embeds sustainability in operations,and an ongoing commitment to holding su

16、E OF SUSTAINABILITY IS GROWINGOverall,the vast majority of industry leaders see sustainability as increasingly important,a sentiment confirmed by Valerie Shen of G2 Venture Partners.“Despite all the budget cuts and turmoil in various markets the last couple of years,sustainability remains as importa

17、nt as it was during the peak of the market.”“For more than half of the leaders surveyed,sustainability is increasing to the highest level of importance in their corporate history.And for most of the rest,its increasing.This is a sign that the importance of sustainability is resilient across market c

20、Zero Tracker confirmed the trend in its 2023 study,which measures progress towards carbon emission reduction targets for more than 4000 entities,including countries,states,and publicly-listed companies from the Forbes Global 2000.The report shows a 123%increase year-over-year in the number of compan

21、ies setting carbon emission targets,a critical milestone in any firms sustainability journey.Now,nearly half of the worlds largest companies have a stated net zero target.Yet when it comes to strategy,implementation,and reporting which the study refers to as“measures of integrity”progress at compani

24、anufacturing has become far less important for engineering leadership in the last year its now at the bottom of their list of priorities as a standalone initiative.Sustainability initiatives are also less important in 2023 for resource-strapped smaller organizations.In addition to being far less lik

29、the hurdles to sustainability most companies are struggling to overcome,we can analyze the concerns in the industry,then share practical advice for how to overcome them.Good intentions,but no practical planAlthough some companies have made progress over the last two years,nearly a third of responden

30、ts work for companies with good intentions,but no practical plan.“A lot of players want to improve sustainability,but dont quite know how to do it,”says Valerie Shen.“Many dont even know how to start,so there is lots of work left to be done.”According to Fictivs Andy Sherman,an effective plan starts

32、 environment,it comes as no surprise sustainable manufacturing initiatives suffer from a lack of funding,which,according to Sherman,“speaks to the need to shrink the green premium.”For example,a major hurdle is power nearly half of leaders say their companies want to increase investment in renewable

33、 energy sources.“Theres a premium,a higher cost associated with purchasing green or net zero-emissions energy,compared to fossil fuels or other non-sustainable energy sources,”adds Sherman,“economies of scale in green energy are not yet where they need to be.”progress.“Very simply,companies are miss

34、ing the instrumentation for actually measuring their scope one and scope two emissions carbon footprint.”“Thats where most companies are far behind,”says Sherman.“Policy requiring climate impact-related disclosures for a subset of companies,like the SECs proposed Climate-Disclosure rule,are at varyi

35、ng stages of progression.But most companies are not ready.We need to continue to develop that as an initiative,internally,across each and every product and manufacturing company.You need to understand the scale of your footprint before you can start thinking about where the greatest opportunities to

36、 improve are.”SUSTAINABILITY IN MANUFACTURING REPORT|18Of course,those premiums are not reflective of the true costs of non-sustainable energy,Sherman admits.“We arent taking into account the total cost to the planet or to the entirety of society.Once those costs are factored in,then,all of a sudden

37、,fossil fuels are far more expensive,especially considering that many of them are highly subsidized by government policy currently in place.”Thats why Sherman believes in having a sustainability lead or team responsible for improving internal literacy,creating decision frameworks,and where it makes

38、sense,to steer companies toward more sustainable policies and operations.While Shermans suggested approach is appealing,it may not be realistic for many companies in 2023.“When times get lean,such as is the case right now,companies focus on efficiency,efficiency,efficiency,to drive profitability.And

39、 so,having a sustainability lead is probably not seen as a must-have for an organization that either lives or dies here in leaner times.”So what else can companies do?SUSTAINABILITY IN MANUFACTURING REPORT|19As Jabils Senior Global Energy Manager,PJ Farrenkopf plays a critical role in the companys s

43、nment PolicyValerie Shen also believes that why companies care about sustainability has a huge impact on the success of their initiatives.“The journey is very different if youre doing it for external PR reasons versus for core internal stakeholders,such as employees or investors.”“Think about Patago

44、nia,for example,where sustainability was fundamental to the founding story,”says Shen,“it demonstrates how leadership is central to the transition from intent to implementation.”And on one hand,executives are far more likely than their director-level reports to say that sustainability is growing in

46、ck of funding for those initiatives so somethings got to give.With more than a quarter of director-level respondents claiming that sustainability is not a priority for leadership(a 37%increase since 2021),executives are struggling with their organizations seemingly contradictory goals.Which is why i

47、ts reasonable to wonder how sustainability initiatives will persist in a world where companies dont have extra cash,and how those initiatives change with leadership turnover.But budgets and leadership priorities arent the only reasons organizations might change their investment in sustainability.Com

48、panies will invest more when theyre legally required to do so,or believe such requirements are coming.Thats why Andy Sherman believes more is required from governments both in the US and around the world to incentivize the investment needed to shrink the“green premium”and get more companies choosing

49、 sustainable solutions.Executives are far more likely to say that sustainability is growing in importance yet also far more likely to report a lack of funding for sustainability initiatives.SUSTAINABILITY IN MANUFACTURING REPORT|22Sherman points to carbon taxes or cap-and-trade systems for carbon em

50、ission as possible solutions,but“the bottom line is that companies are not yet financially incentivized to be at net zero.That gap needs to be closed,and can be,in part through policy.”Embedding sustainability in operationsValerie Shen believes the final reason companies,in particular,care about sus

51、tainability is also the most enduring.“They believe its good business practice that will allow them to grow faster and be more profitable.I think the success of sustainability efforts ultimately depends on how embedded they are in a companys operations,versus being standalone initiatives.”PJ Farrenk

52、opf adds that,“when sustainability is viewed as a separate,isolated initiative,its easy to see why funding and prioritization could be a challenge.However,when sustainability is integrated into a companys values and practices from the outset,it becomes less about securing budget and more about maxim

53、izing efficiency and improving the bottom line.In this sense,sustainability and profitability go hand-in-hand,making it a no-brainer to invest in initiatives that further both goals.”SUSTAINABILITY IN MANUFACTURING REPORT|23Farrenkopf also believes that by integrating sustainability into core operat

54、ions,companies can boost sales and customer loyalty,foster innovation,and strengthen relationships with stakeholders.Andy Sherman agrees.“At the end of the day,we shouldnt need a sustainability lead to say that theres a business case to use more green energy or to reduce our carbon footprint.There s

55、hould be a very strong business case where,financially,it would be irresponsible for us and for all other organizations to not choose more sustainable solutions.”When sustainability is integrated into a companys values and practices from the outset,it becomes less about securing budget and more abou

56、t maximizing efficiency and improving the bottom line.PJ FarrenkopfSenior Global Energy Manager,Jabil“A PRACTICAL APPROACH TO SUSTAINABILITYSUSTAINABILITY IN MANUFACTURING REPORT|25Sherman believes that,even without a sustainability lead,and even in a challenging economic environment,companies can i

57、mplement practical solutions,such as how they design products in the first place.“These are areas that,without further investment,can simply be integrated into the existing product design and new product development(NPD)processes.”To do so,designers must be mindful of the three Rs:reduce,reuse,and r

58、ecycle.“First and foremost,think about reducing the amount of material that is required,”advises Sherman.“Every single gram of material has a carbon footprint associated with it.So how do you create a more minimalist design that meets customer needs,but doesnt use more weight or material than necess

59、ary?”Also,Sherman wants designers to“think about how your product will be used towards the end of its life.”This means considering the materials being used,and whether theyre recyclable or not.In fact,sustainable materials are a leading solution for respondents,with nearly half of surveyed companies

61、 REPORT|27Efficiency is sustainability“You dont even necessarily need to highlight sustainability,”adds Valerie Shen.“You can lead with something thats more obviously good for the bottom line but also more efficient,so sustainability doesnt always need its own bucket of funding.”“Perhaps,for example

62、,we reduce the size of packaging so that we arent spending as much on cardboard,”Shen continued,“which means were also not creating as much cardboard waste.Or maybe we bring in some new technology to reduce the amount of rework and errors in our process,which also means less material and energy wast

63、e.”Shen believes the fact that a majority of companies(60%)are investing in technology to drive operational efficiency represents a key opportunity.“If you drive operational efficiency,this is not sustainability for the sake of altruism and we generally think that altruism doesnt scale.But it is sus

66、d G2 Venture Partners are putting their money where their mouth is by investing in companies such as AssetWatch,which sells a monitoring device for industrial machines in manufacturing environments.The devices artificial intelligence(AI),combined with human monitoring,detects when machines are eithe

67、r failing or not working optimally.PJ Farrenkopf confirms that process optimization and digitization play a major role in reducing energy usage and carbon footprints in manufacturing.“Using advanced sensors,controls,and automation systems can optimize industrial processes,and reduce energy waste.Rea

69、gets.And our respondents agree nearly half say their companies are increasing investment in renewable energy sources.“By fully understanding the energy landscape across different regions and utilizing a diverse range of contractual instruments to source energy,”Farrenkopf says,“organizations can min

70、imize their vulnerability to regulatory and geopolitical shocks.Depending on a single energy source or a limited number of suppliers increases the risk of energy insecurity,as it leaves countries susceptible to external disruptions.”He went on to advise that,“transitioning to cleaner and more sustai

72、le supply chainValerie Shen also thinks that the industrys top business priority for a second straight year “Improving manufacturing and supply chain visibility”(55%)“is good for sustainability goals,too.”She explains,“because then you know where all your stuff is and how exactly its made.So,if anyt

73、hings being made in a dirty or inappropriate way,its not hidden.It can be identified and fixed.”Improving manufacturing and supply chain visibility also unlocks powerful capabilities such as just-in-time(JIT)inventory management.With JIT,companies avoid the risks of inventory build-up,including the

74、likelihood of overstock aging into obsolescence(and into waste)from the warehouse shelf or traveling unnecessary extra distances,which also reduces carbon emissions from transportation.And although weve seen progress,a majority of industry leaders are still challenged by limited control over the sus

76、h data from the 2023 State of Manufacturing Report,which shows half of manufacturing industry leaders,across companies of every size,are re-evaluating their supplier relationships.Also,88%of companies want to reduce their number of suppliers,and 53%want better coordination with suppliers for their p

77、roduct development workflows.Simply put,companies are looking for closer relationships with a tighter network of suppliers.“Working with suppliers or providers that already have the right programs in place to measure and improve upon their carbon emissions doesnt necessarily require further investme

78、nt to roll out broader internal initiatives,”explains Andy Sherman.“You can take a look at a supplier and ask,Hey,are you ISO 14001 certified?Or do you have any programs in place to reduce your carbon footprint?”Shens framing of the supplier control issue is succinct:“Ultimately,your suppliers shoul

79、d be on their own sustainability journey.”She recommends that companies make sustainability part of their request for proposal(RFP)process when initiating a supplier relationship.“Weve found that you have a lot more leverage in the early stages of negotiating when youre setting things up than when y

81、way that you want.”But if you dont have that kind of influence,Shen advises focusing“on what you can do with your own internal operations.And then for all the others in your ecosystem,just keep asking.”“Every year,by asking about impact data,we emphasize that this is important to us,”says Shen.“And

83、USTAINABILITY IN MANUFACTURINGSUSTAINABILITY IN MANUFACTURING REPORT|34THE FUTURE OF SUSTAINABILITY IN MANUFACTURING Given the scale and complexity of addressing climate change,there are a lot of different perspectives.“A lot of people say we have to be at net zero by 2050 or by 2030,implying that i

84、f we dont reach these targets all is lost,”says Shen.“Personally,I dont think thats the best angle because we dont know exactly when the tipping points are going to be,and we dont know exactly whats going to happen at those points.I doubt that if we hit some specific number,suddenly,the world collap

85、ses.”In Shens view,“we dont want to discourage people into thinking,Oh,well were never going to hit that 2030 goal,so whats the point of doing anything?”Instead,she says that“the message should be:This is what we should be aiming for,but any amount of progress that we make is helpful and important.S

87、s optimism.“Over the last few years,weve seen the biggest acceleration on the sustainability front that we have seen in the history of the human race.We need to continue to be eyes wide open to the challenges that we face,and the continued acceleration of investment,across all industries,required to

88、 get us there.”Sherman went on to say that“passing the I.R.A.(Inflation Reduction Act)in the U.S.was one big step,and moving it into implementation is leading to a significant flow of funds into much-needed areas of investment to continue to accelerate technological development.”“But we need to make

89、 plenty more very,very big steps,”he adds.PJ Farrenkopf is also enthusiastic about the potential to accelerate the transition to renewable energy.“As technology advances,it becomes more affordable and efficient,”he says.“The investment in renewable energy components from both the private and public

90、sectors will have a significant impact on electricity generation nationwide.”“Specifically,”says Farrenkopf,“the emphasis on battery power for efficient storage of generated energy will contribute to lower costs for everyone.This development holds great promise for transforming how power is generate
