18、n fact,I started last years QS Yearbook asking the same question.How do you condense an entire year of higher education into only a few hundred pages?Truthfully,we dont know.But its always a unique experience reflecting on 12 or so months worth of rankings and editorial content.Its similar to perusi

19、ng over old photo albums.There are situations that you cant quite remember.Why was my face like that,or,in our case,why did we cover this story?There were a number of significant head-lines form throughout the year,which,at the time I assume,were vitally important.Now,on reflection,however,maybe les

20、s so.And,of course,there were early murmurs and rumours of something big happening that received little attention at the time,but now occupy our thoughts.Two good examples of this are AI,and government policy restricting the interna-tional flow of students.Most of 2023 was dominated by the former,wh

21、ile there was lighter coverage of the latter.In fact,we dedicated an entire edition of QS Insights Magazine exclusively to Artificial Intelligence and education,and the 2024 EduData summit will also consider it and digital transformation in its core theme.More recently,however,its been difficult not

22、 to get caught up in negative rhet-oric and concerns over the future of international student recruitment in several key regions.Some regions seem to be closing the door,or at least threatening to do so,and graduate employment opportunities for international students look like they might start dryin

23、g up.This introduction isnt to set the stage for tragedy.I have often said in these intro-ductions,the best way to ensure youre wrong is to make a prediction and we dont yet know exactly where policies will land.While we do make predictions in this book(hope-fully educated ones),my reflection on the

24、 past year is to observe the rapid change in priorities.While,in the moment,it may not have seemed that swift,12 months isnt so long for sentiment to have changed so dramatically.I wonder what we will be reflecting on in 2025.Like other editions,the 2024 QS Yearbook reflects on the year that was,bri

25、nging in quantitative and qualitative perspectives,through QS rankings&ratings and its edito-rial content,respectively.Inside,youll find a number of articles from QS Insights Maga-zine accompanying the rankings that provide a little more context to the pure numbers.We have also included some new ana

26、lysis,particularly around the influence of government policies and the subjects students choose to study.While we are currently more acutely aware of the negative impacts of policy,we also explore how policy can be used to encourage students into certain areas.Earlier this year,we launched the QS Mi

27、dweek Brief,a weekly digest of articles from the most recent QSIM.Within the magazine,we also began sharing fast facts,short pieces of data relevant to the featured articles,to provide a little context.In this edition of the Yearbook,weve included snippets of whats been covered so far.Like our long

28、form analysis,it shows a correlation between actions and students choices.2023 also saw QS celebrate the 20th edition of the World University Rankings.Amusingly,the rankings are of an age where they could soon be contemplating their own postgraduate options.Like many young adults,the flagship WUR ha

29、s changed direction slightly,or at least,added some new areas of interest.In addition to the IRN,which was introduce a few years ago,Employment Outcomes and Sustainability indicators are now inbuilt into the rankings,creating new and inter-esting results.Complementing this change,weve made our own c

30、hanges within this book.In particular,weve opted not to include an institutions rank from the previous year,or indicated whether they went up or down.These changes serve a handful of purposes.Firstly,most obviously comparing between the most recent and previous rankings is no longer a like-for-like

31、exercise with the updated methodology.Secondly,movement in the rankings themselves dont indicate the reasons behind those moves without also including the requisite data,which we hadnt done in the past.A university may fall in the rankings because oth-er universities have performed much stronger.Lik

32、ewise,a university may rise in the rankings because theyve maintained performance while others have worsened.In both instances,the university has had less influence on their overall performance than colleagues elsewhere.Finally,there is a level of recognition that each year,the rankings has expanded

33、 the number of universities included.Like the above example,a decrease in position can simply be because other,new universities have debuted higher.What this means is that the 2024 QS Yearbook is slightly smaller than previous years,but no less dense in the breadth of information it provides.With 10

34、0 universities per page,compared to 50 in previous editions,there is now more room for analysis,detailed information on the rankings methodologies,and some new bits and pieces.On behalf of the team,thank you for taking time to read this volume of the QS Yearbook.I hope it takes pride of place on you

46、While AI as both a learning tool and discipline to learn featured prominently at Reima-gine Education,the largest area of interest for academics was on their research prac-tices,with 69%believing AI will have an impact.In the 2023 QS Gen AI Academic Pulse Survey,academia also felt the following will

47、 be impacted by AI:Assessment and grading(44%)Administrative tasks(44%)Pedagogical approach(43%);and Student support and counselling(41%)Respondents overwhelmingly showed positive sentiment toward AI,with 78%saying they were interested,34%surprised and 26%felt enjoyment.While predominantly positive,

48、an important minority also indicated they felt fear(16%),sadness(6%)and anger(2%),among other negative emotions,a response universities should consider.28 February 2024In the QS Global Employer Survey 2022,respondents in North America were asked:which graduate skills do you think artificial intellig

59、rcent of students changed courses during this period,according to a report from the Melbourne Institute.A deeper understanding of the context of Australian higher ed immediately prior and after the schemes launch gives an indication of why it was implemented.According to the QS World University Rank

63、 sector expertise.According to the recently released Business school applicant trends and motivations in 2024,the specialisation preferences saw a desire towards industry specialisation alongside their business studies from 2021-2023.5.5%of applicants also preferred to specialise in Real Estate,up f

67、rning 21%=5.Depth of knowledge in subject 21%Last week,we explored the rise in interest of interdisciplinary studies in GME.Real Estate,Healthcare,Sustainability Management,and Technology were all new specialisations that saw interest grow significantly between 2021-2023,according to QS Business sch

68、ool applicant trends and motivations in 2024.While traditional specialisations of business studies remain the most popular,they did see a decrease in interest which shifted towards the non-traditional.Management declined 3.8 percentage points,down to 55.7%from 59.5%Finance/Economics saw a decline of

69、 2.1 percentage points,to 34.9%from 37%.Accounting had the largest decline,shrinking by 5.6 percentage points to 12.4%in 2023,compared to 18%in 2021.Operational Management closely followed with a 5.5 percentage point drop to 10.4%compared to 15.9%two years earlier.Leadership withdrew 2.9 percentage

75、ted thinking of providing comparative data about universities for prospec-tive students while he was studying for his MBA at the Wharton School of Univer-sity of Pennsylvania.It was the 90s and the world was about to experience vibrant shifts in globalisation.“QS originated at Wharton and the missio

76、n we have today is the mission we formulated in the 1990s,”Quacquarelli tells QS Insights Magazine.“We didnt embark on rankings in the start,we did research and indicated which business schools em-ployers would favour.”At this point,QS was producing global employer surveys to provide information abo

77、ut MBAs for students.International student mobility looked dramatically different back then,with less students crossing borders for various stages of their education.The MBA was the most popular international student option.By the 2000s however,it was clear the tide was turning and more students wer

78、e looking at undergraduate and masters programs.Getting down to business“It became absolutely mission-led to develop a ranking that compared universi-ties so students could understand their choices across a broad portfolio of pro-grams,”says Quacquarelli.This particular success story has a familiar

79、ring to it:he saw a significant gap in the industry and eventually found a way to fill it,alongside like-minded people.As fate would have it,Higher Education Writer and Editor,John OLeary,was Editor at The Times when he met Quacquarelli in 2000.OLeary had been working on UK university rankings since

80、 1993.“It became obvious that rankings needed an international dimension to it,there were so many people studying abroad,or doing research projects,”says OLeary.He had been speaking with Quacquarelli and Ben Sowter,now Senior Vice Pres-ident at QS,about creating an international ranking for some tim

81、e.They conducted field research,reviewed metrics and travelled around the world,speaking to heads of universities to understand the best methodologies for putting rankings together,with Times Higher Education as their initial publishing partner.“We were quite nervous about it,it hadnt been done befo

82、re,and we expected there would be resistance and skepticism from universities,”OLeary recollects.Universities were used to domestic reports for universities and while this would be a game-changer,it was risky.According to OLeary,QS became successful largely because they were the pioneers in the fiel

84、sity Rankings 2024Strong rootsThroughout the journey,QS north star has always been the needs of international stu-dents.The rankings align with QS mission to empower motivated students across the globe to fulfil their potential,explains Quacquarelli.“Within each region of the world,there are differi

85、ng priorities,like regional employ-ment outcomes,regional collaboration and student mobility,knowledge transfer to local industry or quality teaching staff,which enable us to produce adaptive regional rankings in the world.”Quacquarelli refers to the QS Best Student Cities ranking launched in 2012,a

86、s an example which does not directly compare universities.“Rather,it looks at the afforda-bility and quality concentration of universities around the world,specifically to respond to the needs of students who are limited by budget,rather than ability,”he notes.A student-centric focus has arguably co

87、ntributed to an en-vironment of greater inclusion and equality.Going to university is not solely about gaining a flawless academic transcript-it is also about the invaluable experience one can gain learning how to build a foundation for themselves.Now,students have more options to explore when consi

88、dering higher education.As QS continues to survey its student audience,new interests are identified.In 2022,QS Sustainability ranking was launched as a direct response to findings that revealed 72 percent of international students believed universities should be making a contribution to the environm

89、ent.This year,QS is introducing new metrics in response to shifting student demands and in 2024,there will be new rankings in the employability space.While the world encounters numerous changes,QSs surveys and rankings remain steadfast as it seeks to integrate the voice of students and the higher ed

90、ucation sector.Resetting the rankingsFor this special edition of the QS World University Rankings,the methodology has been transformed to better reflect the higher education sector today.Based on diligent in-depth research and surveys about students,institutions,academics and employers,QS has carefu

91、lly integrated three new indicators into the rankings:Sustainability,employability and international research collaboration.The results of a recent QS survey which included over 140 institutions revealed that 90 percent believed it was important to be more sustainable.QS is the first of the major wo

92、rld rankings to integrate Sustainability as a metric.Employment outcomes are growing increasingly significant as a students employ-ability shapes student recruitment and student satisfaction.The QS International Stu-dent Survey 2023 revealed up to 39 percent of respondents said that a high graduate

93、employment rate was one of their top five concerns when selecting a university.Finally,the collaboration and knowledge transfer that can occur between insti-tutions raises the quality of research and ultimately,can be effective and useful for tackling global issues.The International Research Network

94、(IRN)indicator that has been added to the rankings evaluates the international partners that universities have included in their published papers.Originally published In QS Insights Magazine 5,July 2023.“The rankings really transformed more than once and the surveys for them have grown.”QS started w

95、ith just 200 institutions for the WURs first release in 2004,and now,more than 1,000 universities are included in the rankings.Growth and adaptabilityMany individuals who saw the creation of WUR highlighted significant shifts in the rankings over time and how it has had a growing positive impact on

96、higher ed-ucation and students.“The rankings really transformed more than once and the surveys for them have grown,”says Martin Ince,QS Advisor Board Member and former Deputy Editor at Times Higher Education.As another key figure who was there at the very beginning,Ince saw QS adapt to growing inter

97、connectivity in the higher education industry and new student demands.“The growth of WUR is due to the simple fact that to become an international stu-dent is an increasingly serious and popular decision.“The growth of regional rankings,such as Asia in 2009,was propelled by students and universities

98、 wanting more information.There was also a need for data that reflected the number of exchange students and programs,which would make way for greater cross bor-der collaboration,”explains Ince.For OLeary,the introduction of QS WUR by Subject in 2011 was another major trans-formation.With 26 subjects

169、ighest for those wanting to study Medicine&Dentistry,according to the QS International Student Survey 2023.In 2021,Dominica,a country located in the Caribbean with one of the highest net emigration rates in the world,was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.News reports have also stated that Dominicas

170、education system has been“commissioned to train persons for the job market of the United States,Canada,Antigua,Guadeloupe,St Mar-tin,Tortola and other countries in the region”.None of the Dominica students in the QS survey said that they expected to return home immediately after finishing their cour

171、se,with 25 percent of them saying that they plan to stay in the country they study in permanently.With a high demand of physi-cians needed in countries like the US,it seems that students are strategically pursuing careers with international mobility.Brunei was also facing a shortage of healthcare wo

172、rkers in 2021,after it requested the exempted them from a deployment cap on nurses and medical doctors.Mean-while,the healthcare market in Bahrain has been growing at an annual average rate of 12.2 percent,from an estimated$1.1 billion in 2015 to an estimated$2.0 billion in 2020,according to its gov

173、ernment.However,employment in the sector has been unable to keep pace with expansion.The industry is growing by approximately 10 percent per annum,although health-care-sector employment has been growing at around half this rate since 2009,accord-ing to the countrys Economic Development Board.By stra

174、tegically choosing courses in high demand locally and internationally,students like those in Dominica,Brunei,and Bahrain are not only pursuing personal interests but also adapting to the realities shaped by their countrys policies and external forces.Conversely,some students deliberately choose not

315、ugh research,private and public collaborations,as well as engagement with its community.Not to mention,it is where leading experts and researchers are able to develop new technologies that are needed to accelerate the green transition.So far,over 1,000 higher education institutions have pledged to h

316、it net zero by 2050 in the United Nations Race to Zero global campaign,in order to avoid dangerous climate change.Already,a number of institutions have claimed to achieve their target.However,the job is far from done.The reality is decarbonisation is still a work in progress and much more investment

317、 and development are still needed for institutions to truly be emissions free.Carbon neutral vs zero emissionsIn the US,13 institutions have declared they achieved climate neutrality,according to the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education,with some even doing so ahead

318、of their set target dates.While it may seem impressive,it has been argued that carbon neutrality should not be the end goal,instead more focus needs to be on cutting emissions instead of relying on methods like carbon offsets to achieve net zero.“Carbon neutrality has not served us very well as an o

319、verall goal in the climate space,”says Alex Barron,Associate Professor of Environmental Science and Policy at Smith College.“Most of the institutions that we studied achieved the bulk of their com-mitment using a mix of measures that are often of low quality with uncertain reductions or very hard to

320、 scale.”Professor Barron co-authored a 2021 paper that examined the approaches of high-er education institutions that have already announced achieving net carbon neutrality.The study found that while pursuing neutrality led to important institutional shifts toward sustainability,such as the setting

321、up of sustainability offices,electrification and new zero-carbon electricity is often underutilised.The study also noted that no institution achieved net neutrality without significant use of accounting-based instruments,with the majority of all claimed emissions re-ductions coming from purchased of

322、fsets and unbundled renewable energy certificates rather than direct emission reductions.“The primary thing that we suggest in the paper is that institutions refocus their direct climate mitigation activity,”says Professor Barron,speaking to QS Insights Mag-azine.That means that institutions should

323、put more focus on decarbonisation,which is eliminating emissions of greenhouse gasses on campus directly,he explains.This is not just an issue faced by universities stateside.Higher education institutions globally are having to make major operational changes in order to transition from fossil fuel e

325、financially sustainable choices for the future.Collaboration is key“Every institution is constrained in its actions and that includes,budget,workforce and bandwidth,”says Professor Barron.“Everyone needs to collaborate to make sure that everyone is able to rise past these constraints and take the ac

326、tions that we know we need to take,”he says.One example is Smith Colleges work developing a carbon pricing strategy that is part of a toolkit being distributed by the national Carbon Pricing in Higher Edu-cation Working Group.The toolkit includes case studies and recommendations on how colleges and

327、universities can put a price tag on carbon emissions to demonstrate the environmental costs of specific products and technologies.“That was a very thoughtful choice to make sure that the action that we were taking was going to have an impact beyond our borders and scale,”says Professor Barron,“how t

328、o collaborate with other institutions and partners to have a bigger impact and to move more quickly.”In a similar spirit,the Monash Universitys Energy Institute and Climateworks Centre to-gether with the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network developed a detailed guide,available in multiple la

329、nguages to support the net zero initiatives of colleges and universities globally.It has also sprouted an online community that shares their knowledge about the net zero transition on university campuses.“What weve discovered is that we can learn a lot from each other,”says Professor Thwaites,“and t
