14、dorsPROMAT 2023 POST-SHOW ANALYST REPORTMarket Sentiment is Tale of Two HalvesWe met with 150 different companies in Chicago last week.An informal survey as part of our discussions revealed very mixed sentiments about market condition,though broadly falling into two camps.Setting aside the newly-eme
15、rged startups,general consensus was that 2023 was looking incredibly strong for mobile automation(both AGVs and AMRs),whilst fixed warehouse automation vendors were faring much worse.Whilst still sitting on huge order backlog from the boom of 2020-2021,fixed warehouse automation vendors saw a dip in
16、 order intake in 2022 and 2023 is not looking much better.In general,CAPEX constraints at major retailers and manufacturers remains a problem for fixed warehouse automation companies,whilst scalable technology,costing under$20m that is fast to deploy and quick to obtain a positive ROI is in high dem
17、and(i.e.,mobile automation).Greenfield warehouse construction has very clearly slowed in the US.One of the most mentioned drivers for mobile robots was rocketing demand from major 3PLs.3PLs are considered both a customer and also a sales channel for mobile robots as they deploy AMRs at customer site
18、s with their end customers paying partly or fully for the robots.These 3PLs have been piloting and using AMRs for several years and are now deploying them at scale in face of a major labor shortage in the US.The low CAPEX they require,flexibility(e.g.being able to move them to different end customer
19、s)and fast time to deploy has made AMRs extremely attractiveConversely,we heard reports of many companies(both robotics and fixed automation)laying off people and a number struggling financially.The divide in fortunes across the industry could not be starker and we expect continued volatility in the

22、act Analysis.All Rights Reserved.Mobile robots and fixed warehouse automation historically served different markets(different customer types,or different workflows,or warehouses that had different needs).Of course,there has always been integrated solutions which use both,but generally mobile robots
23、were creating a new automation customer base,rather than cannibalizing the fixed automation segment.We are however now seeing a shift with mobile robot solutions being used in larger projects,that historically would have been served by a fixed warehouse automation solution provider.We heard reports
24、of a$200m+project being lost at the late stages by a fixed automation system integrator(we wont name names)and instead being awarded to two mobile robot solution providers.AMR technology has continued to improve over the last few years,becoming faster,more intelligent and more robust.Coupled with th
25、e hundreds of proven deployments,AMRs are more commonly being accepted in larger automation projects.This is being further helped by the proliferation of AMR solution approaches(e.g.,mobile ASRS,tote-to-person solutions from companies like Exotec,HAI,Geek+,CAJA,etc)which provide solutions for more u

27、ential.2023 Interact Analysis.All Rights Reserved.Our impression today is that AMRs are opening up new market segments that historically could not afford to invest in large-scale fixed automation.Smaller retailers and most 3PLs have largely still used manual warehouses for their operation.Because of
28、 this,we believe that currently AMRs are providing additional TAM opportunities rather than cannibalizing fixed warehouse automation revenues.We do however expect this to change and this was evident at ProMat.Firstly,AMR technology is becoming more suitable to larger warehouses and more accepted.Sec
29、ond,3PLs are understood to be gaining market share overall as retailers and manufacturers outsource their logistics to these companies(we will actually bepublishing some dedicated research on this topic later this year,so please get in touch if you are interested in learning more.)If 3PLs gain great

33、ide a live-stream of the vehicles,coupled with a digital twin of their facility.Rather than automating the vehicle,Motion2AI aims to provide value by providing safety alerts to fork truck drivers(and those people near the vehicles),provide route optimization using AI algorithms and reporting on util
34、ization and usage of vehicles to improve productivity.This“automation-lite”approach aims to reduce costs by making manual drivers more efficient.The target customer for the company is naturally those companies using manual forklifts but are not ready to make the leap to fully automated vehicles.We u
35、nderstand that the company currently has 15-20 pilot projects running around the world across forklift fleets.The company works on a SaaS model charging a subscription fee for each vehicle.Phantom AutoPhantom Auto takes a different approach to solving a similar problem.The company purchases manual f
36、orklifts and adds LiDAR sensors as well as cameras.As well as providing a manual driver with additional safety and information about their surroundings,what is unique is that the vehicles can also driven remotely by one of Phantom Autos employees.One of the companys strategies revolves around custom
37、ers being unable to find and hire drivers.In these cases,Phantom Auto provides the vehicles and the remote drivers,effectively allowing customers to outsource their manual drivers.This approach still requires a 1:1 ratio of drivers to vehicles and so we dont see the unit economics working right now(
38、despite the fact that drivers can be hired in lower cost regions and will likely have a lower turnover in staff due to remote working conditions).Nonetheless,Phantom Auto has an impressive roster of clients already using the solution including NFI(3PL)and ArcBest across tens of sites today.These two

40、23 POST-SHOW ANALYST REPORTNew Vendors Bring Concept of Shared Autonomy&Telematics to ForkliftsThird Wave AutomationThird Wave Automation is yet another company aiming to make forklifts more efficient and productive.Like Phantom Auto,TWA uses remote operators to help guide forklifts around customer
41、facilities.Where it differs is that instead of using manual forklifts,it is periodically taking manual control of autonomous forklifts by remote human operators(the operators are physically located in a control room within the facility).The logic here is that the AMR can operate perfectly well for s
42、aying 95%of the time,but in some instances,it requires additional help.This approach means that only one manual driver is required per 10 forklifts.Furthermore,by combining manual intervention with machine learning,TWA is able to make the forklifts more intelligent over time and complete tasks bette
43、r.TWA buys Clark Material Handling and Toyota trucks and adds 3D cameras and LiDAR to produce a robust AMR.The vehicles are able to operate fully autonomously,but the company models that they will require 6 minutes of intervention within every hour.Whilst weve not measured the ROI on these various a
44、pproaches,it does appear on first look like the unit economics of Third Wave Automations solution could make good sense.The company operates purely on a RaaS(rental)model,charging customers a monthly fee determined based on their existing manual labor costs.TWA is still in its early stages with just

52、how which is in line with our observation that point solutions are in high demand as the development of greenfield sites slows down.Boston Dynamics generated a lot of interest last year at Modex with its robot named Stretch.This year,Boston Dynamics was joined by Pickle Robot,Mujin,and Slip Robotics
53、,while Bastian Solutions announced the launch of its Ultra Blue solution a few weeks prior to ProMat.Boston Dynamics currently has a first-mover advantage,following a$15 million deal with DHL and on-going trials with H&M and GAP.However,given the growth of floor-loaded shipments,coupled with the on-

55、s)to unload boxes one at a time.Somewhat unusually,Pickle decided to publish its RaaS pricing prominently on its booth perhaps in an attempt o thwart any preconceived notions of the solution being prohibitively expensive.Slip Robotics displayed perhaps the most unusual and counter-intuitive robotic
56、solution for loading and unloading trailers.Its solution is an AMR conveyor capable of carrying loads of up to 18,000 lbs(8,100 kg).The AMR is loaded with boxes and pallets in the warehouse and then it drives autonomously into the trailer where it stays until it reaches its destination.Once at the d
57、estination warehouse it simple drives out of the trailer to be unloaded.The company claimed that this cut loading and unloading times by up to an hour at each end(saving up to 90%on associated labor costs).Currently it only offers the robots on a rental basis.Clearly this novel type of robot is for

63、ts Reserved.One of the most noticeable trends from the show was the prominence of robotic picking solutions.Almost all demonstrations had some form of robotic picking application,including piece picking,depalletizing,or robotic sorting.Whilst we didnt see any new entrants in the robotic picking spac
64、e,we did notice that the pick rates and success rates had improved materially.For example,Kindred mentioned that the pick rate of its Sort robot has increased 17%year on year due to advances in machine learning technologies.By 2030,we expect forecast that approximately 150,000 robotic picking system
65、s will be installed with annual shipments reaching 50,000 units.This corresponds to a penetration*of approximately 2%by 2030,highlighting the fact that well only have scratched the surface by then.The market is driven by 3 key factors which we discuss in more detail in this insight.Firstly,the types
66、 of roles in warehouses is changing over time with more static manipulation roles,driven by the growth in automation solutions.Secondly,the price of picking robots is coming down,while labor costs are going up making the unit-economics more attractive.Lastly,machine vision and gripping technology is

72、partnerships among the industry accelerate.The number of partnerships signed between warehouse automation/robotics vendors grew from 29 in 2020 to 68 and 84 in 2021 and 2022,respectively.Hardware-agnosticism will inevitably proliferate as companies seek to become solution providers for anykind of cu
73、stomer or facility,rather than being limited to their own technology.One of the key advantages that hardware-agnostic integrators tout is their neutrality when it comes to recommending technologies and can work with a wide variety of partners.On the other hand,OEM/Integrators have the benefit of bei
74、ng a single throat-to-choke if something goes wrong.Furthermore,it can be difficult to get disparate systems to communicate effectively which is why equipment manufacturer by the same OEM can often be orchestrated more easily.In general,weve seen that the largest projects which are greater than$50 m

86、layed or even cancelled,whilst smaller projects were going ahead(though perhaps with slower sign-off).One of the likely reasons behind this is the slowdown in greenfield developments following the COVID-19 boom in warehouse construction.Instead,end-customers are focusing on increasing the efficiency
87、 of their existing facilities by automating particular workflows using various point solutions such as automated put-walls,robotic sortation systems,and AMRs.The graph to the right comes from our Warehouse Building Stock Database and shows that In 2023,we expect a 35%decline in the number of new war
