1、SnapshotGlobal Digital SubscriptionQ1 Update20232Is the rise of AI the clincher for a paid content strategy?Over the last few years,weve seen the rise of a number of new technologies that have promised to change not only our industry but the wider world.Not all of those have delivered on that promis
2、e blockchain,anyone?but the latest in that chain,AI,does seem to be capable of living up to the hype.Whether its in writing marketing copy or coding an app,improving diagnosis in healthcare or,as happened recently,enabling the discovery of a new antibiotic,AI does promise revolution in large areas o
3、f industry and society.There are plenty who believe it will have a similarly revolutionary impact in media.Im not quite sure we should believe Jonah Perettis prediction that generative AI tools“will kill the majority of new static content.”Given Buzzfeeds strategy relies on precisely this,Im not sur
4、e thats necessarily an entirely unbiased view.It might be more accurate,however,to say that AI might prove the final nail in the coffin of the advertiser-funded content business model.The potential for institutions and individuals to create vast quantities of content,effectively at zero marginal cos
5、t,means that search results and SEO have the potential to be rapidly overwhelmed.Content navigation might become even harder.The expectation is that this might result in a new“flight to quality”,as consumers flock to brands they trust to deliver reliable content.In such a situation,it will also make
6、 little sense for publishers to effectively provide AI tools with the fuel they need to operate our content for free.Not a case of biting the hand that feeds you but rather cutting off its circulation.The combination of these two circumstances means that we can expect a rapid adoption of paid conten
7、t strategies,not only by those news media businesses that have yet to do so but also by magazine media companies that have thus far been reluctant.An effective paid content strategy will move beyond being an option and become a necessity.As they do so,this Snapshot,which we are publishing as ever in
8、 partnership with our friends at Piano,will become ever more vital.The data it provides can lend support to your strategic decision making and provide comfort to hesitant investors.Paid content works.It works everywhere.And scale,when it comes,is incredibly lucrative.AI is more of a cloud than a ray

71、ion revenues.The combination of a looming recession one we must be careful not to talk ourselves into and inflation are casting a shadow over revenue streams that had looked to be in healthy post-Covid recovery.Eyes that had long been diverted elsewhere have started turning back to the relative comf
72、ort of the advertising market,quickly forgetting the frequent storms that blow over that particular safe harbour.But the evidence of our latest Global Digital Subscription Snapshot,produced as always in collaboration with our friends at Piano,suggest otherwise.The number of titles reporting data con
73、tinues to grow(were up to 140 now)and the total volume of digital subscriptions exceeds 40m globally,a significant number.We see evidence of growth everywhere,and no sign that publishers are yet being affected by any sort of slowdown.Indeed,we would endorse the findings of our sister organisation IN
74、MA,who believe that publishers will continue to see healthy growth in 2023.The idea that news subscriptions,which tend to attract wealthier consumers and are therefore more recession-proof,is a compelling one,particularly given the nature of the titles that do well in this space.Our quarterly snapsh
75、ots will reveal the truth of this throughout the year though.Theres been a lot of talk in recent months too about the decline of the creator economy and that the newsletter boom is over,both of which are firmly rebuffed by the latest results from Substack.They continue to show robust growth and are
76、adding new formats to their platform,becoming a truly multi-media publishing business for the first time.Similarly,the results of Clarn in Argentina are a welcome boost for a media market that has suffered in recent years.Their historic milestone of 600k subscribers,bringing them into the global Top
77、 20 for the first time,is not to be overlooked.Nor is the success of FIPP members Harvard Business Review in their latest results,we congratulate them on building a digital subscriptions base that now accounts for fully a third of their overall subscriber numbers.Having been seen as a contender to c
78、hallenge NYTs position as perennial market leaders in this space,the difficulties the Washington Post is experiencing come as a surprise.We all thought that the combination of Amazon tech and marketing know-how with Bezos bottomless reserves of cash would create a true competitor to the Times domina
