18、atest challenges for most development organizations is to navigate the complex technology environments that new,cloud-native application development and application modernization span.Adding to this complexity is the need to develop with multicloud and hybrid cloud deployment scenarios,including mak

19、ing use of on-premises infrastructure and ongoing use of selected existing applications.The need to navigate this complexity is necessary because of the spectrum of benefits offered by various vendors and on-premises resources,including efficiency,performance,cost-effectiveness,and regulatory concer

20、ns.For example,data storage workloads may be best suited to one vendor and artificial intelligence/machine learning(AI/ML)workloads to another vendor,and new and existing applications alike may need on-premises infrastructure or a particular cloud provider to meet data residency requirements.Based o

21、n this research,IDC projects that study participants would realize a three-year ROI of 642%and annual benefits worth$55,100 per 100 users by using all three Red Hat solutions through:Empowering development teams to deliver impactful,relevant,and timely functionality to customers and business users I

32、valuate the likely combined value of using all three Red Hat solutions as part of a unified development and delivery platform.Interviewed Red Hat customers shared an enterprise profile,with an average of 42,771 employees and$8.0 billion in annual revenue(medians of 7,750 employees and$2.0 billion in

33、 annual revenue).As shown in Table 1,study participants were mostly based in the United States and provided experiences from many industry verticals,including financial services(7),healthcare(3),IT services(3),higher education(2),media(2),pharmaceutical(2),retail(2),utilities(2),insurance,manufactur

35、ions for a Development and Delivery Platform Interviewed Red Hat customers detailed their reasons for selecting Red Hat OpenShift and Red Hat Application Foundations(which includes Red Hat Runtimes and Red Hat Integration).The drivers of their choices shared many commonalities.Most importantly,the o

36、rganizations needed to establish an IT foundation for their development and business activities that would enable greater agility,purpose,and direction.Their legacy solutions and approaches exerted too much friction,and they wanted to take advantage of greater functionality and new technologies thro

37、ugh the use of these Red Hat solutions to not only move at the speed required by their businesses but also capture cost and operational efficiencies and performance improvements.Study participants provided specific considerations:Support innovation in hybrid cloud environment(retail):“With Red Hat O

38、penShift,we can utilize the underlying controls for containerization.We can also do integration across legacy apps and cloud-based apps,which facilitates innovation necessary to connect these different architectures while supporting our move to cloud.None of the other solutions we considered gave us

39、 the dynamic flexibility that OpenShift offered.”Impact on service delivery;wanted open source solution(media):“We deployed Red Hat Runtimes because of its impact on the speed of delivery.Basically,we have a business requirement of agile development and faster delivery at a reasonable cost.We also c

40、hose Runtimes because it is open source.Even though we are a legacy company,we look at it as preventing vendor lock-in.”Needed solution to help modernize application development efforts(industry):“The main reason we chose Red Hat Integration is our application development,both in terms of changing o

41、ur reference architecture toward more microservices,container-based,more API-driven type of development.We want something more modernized.”Study participants reported supporting significant development and overall business operations with Red Hat application development and delivery solutions.Most i

42、nterviewed organizations use Red Hat OpenShift(80%),while two thirds of interviewed organizations use Red Hat Runtimes and 39%of study participants use Red Hat Integration.Interviewed Red Hat customers run and support an average of 114 business applications(median of 50)with these Red Hat developmen

44、,Red Hat Runtimes,and Red Hat Integration,IDC evaluated the likely value of using all three solutions as part of a unified development and delivery platform based on Red Hat technologies.IDC expects that a unified development and delivery platform would significantly reduce friction across various d

45、evelopment-related activities,which would enable much more effective development efforts that drive improved business results.Study participants provided practical examples of how their use of these Red Hat solutions in a development and delivery platform portfolio have improved the effectiveness of

46、 their development activities while also spurring business gains alongside operational cost savings and efficiencies:Development enablement,new technology use(retail):“Red Hat OpenShift has enabled containerization and DevOps.We have much better visibility into whats happening.We also have better de

47、velopment cycles,allowing us to have development be more dynamic in responding to the needs of the business.Red Hat OpenShift is also more cost effective.”Higher revenue through competitive advantage linked to faster delivery(financial services):“We end up with higher revenue with Red Hat Runtimes b

48、ecause reducing time to deliver new features and functionality helps in terms of not only customer retention but adding new customers.If we can deploy new functionality faster than competitors,it gives us a competitive advantage,which drives revenue.”Easier to containerize and develop microservices(

49、industry):“We could containerize without the tools,but containerizing with Red Hat Fuse and AMQ makes it more mutable and able to run across the OpenShift platform.They integrate better into the applications with Red Hat Integration,which also allows us to get into the microservice design of applica

50、tions.So microservices are easier to create and maintain better time to market.”Based on interviews with organizations using Red Hat OpenShift,Red Hat Runtimes,and Red Hat Integration,IDC projects that use of all three as part of a unified development and delivery platform would yield annual benefit

54、 by reducing their time to market.IDC calculates that they would realize net revenue gains worth an annual average of$19,800 per 100 users($8.46 million per organization)through use of all three Red Hat solutions.Risk mitigation user productivity benefits:Study participants limited business costs as

59、r impactful digital applications and functionality to their business users and customers.As business expectations for development activities increase and grow in scope and complexity,increasingly distributed development teams working hand in hand with IT infrastructure teams must develop and manage

60、applications in the context of heightened business expectations for quality,timeliness,and impact.This makes having the right development platform and tools all the more important for most organizations.The Red Hat solutions,including Red Hat OpenShift,Red Hat Runtimes,and Red Hat Integration,which

61、combine to form a development and delivery platform,are designed to address development-related challenges by integrating,aligning,and automating activities across the development life cycle.Further,they allow organizations to take advantage of technologies that are more flexible,which improves deve

62、lopment teams access to much-needed compute,storage,and other IT resources,thereby reducing friction associated with creating,using,and taking down environments used for development and deployment.Interviewed organizations agreed that Red Hat solutions have allowed them to streamline activities rela

63、ted to integration,development,and deployment of new applications and features.These efficiencies enable their teams to better focus on application logic and speeding up development life cycles to bring new applications and features to market sooner.Study participants spoke to efficiencies across th

64、e development process that ultimately help them deliver higher-quality applications and features to their businesses with greater frequency and agility.For example,establishing efficient development processes often hinges on increasing the speed,quality,and frequency of application integration.Organ

65、izations noted efficiencies in integration as a key value proposition.One interviewed Red Hat Integration customer explained:“The most significant benefit is the integration.We moved from a pure in-house development of focus on application integration to support a hybrid model.”Another study partici

66、pant spoke of how Red Hat Integration helps it automate and orchestrate integration processes:“Red Hat Integration follows along our strategic initiative around automation and orchestration of our business processes.Taking advantage of Red Hat technology means the integration capabilities allow us t

74、 velocity of new applications and features that reach employees and customers.Study participants provided specific examples of what they have achieved using Red Hat OpenShift,Runtimes,and Integration:Faster to market with new applications(media):“Red Hat OpenShift has helped with development;previou

75、sly,when we did application upgrades,it took significantly longer,but with container-based and microservices-based development,we are able to deploy new applications,especially mobile apps for social media,for content delivery,at a faster rate.”Compressed development life cycles and overall developm

76、ent efficiencies(financial services):“Our product development life cycle is better because we know we have the right code with Red Hat Runtimes and testing is integrated.We used to average 90 days to market;now its no more than 45 days.Overall,Runtimes has increased our development efficiency by at

77、least 20%,and we can make changes or address customer requests faster with an integrated platform.”Table 3(next page)demonstrates the significant impact of using Red Hat solutions on development activity.Importantly,study participants reported compressing development life cycles for entirely new app

78、lications and new features,which means that new and relevant functionality reaches end users weeks,if not months,sooner.Based on study results,IDC projects that use of a unified development and delivery platform based on Red Hat solutions would result in substantial reductions in development life cy

79、cles of new applications(38%on average)and new features(55%on average).Further,optimized life cycles reflect the ability of development teams to deliver new applications and features with less effort,which allows for greater development volume.Again,IDC expects that efficiencies would increase with

80、the establishment and use of a unified development and delivery platform,which would help development teams increase their throughput to even greater extents than the use of individual Red Hat solutions.Based on research with Red Hat customers,IDC expects that interviewed organizations would increas

81、e the number of new applications delivered to the business by an average of 65%and new features by almost three times(190%).These findings in turn reflect on the value that development teams and organizations provide on an ongoing basis in terms of meeting changing business needs and expectations.13

87、 HatAcross-the-board efficiencies and gains in development-related outputs reflect these teams ability to deliver more value to their organizations.For study participants,these gains manifested themselves in terms of higher developer productivity levels;their development teams can deliver innovative

88、,functional,and relevant applications and features to their businesses with increased frequency and reliability.They provided examples of how the use of Red Hat solutions has increased productivity levels:Driver of innovation and speed to market(financial services):“Red Hat OpenShift reduces complex

89、ity,which makes it easier for the development team to innovate.It allows us to move faster than the traditional release cycle.That ability to move faster and prove/disprove what youve created allows innovation to fly.For us,that translates into being able to develop new products for market quicker.”

90、Substantial development productivity gains(financial services):“Red Hat Runtimes allows our developers to work a lot more quickly,by at least 20%.Rather than trying to find third-party products to work on an application,or write applications,they have a comprehensive and integrated toolset.That is t

159、ilized for this white paper.This methodology is based on gathering data from organizations currently using the Red Hat solutions,Red Hat OpenShift,Red Hat Runtimes,and Red Hat Integration,to support their development and IT environments as the foundation for the model.For the purposes of this study,

160、these Red Hat solutions are referred to collectively as a“unified development and delivery platform.”Based on interviews with these study participants,IDC has calculated the potential benefits and costs to these organizations of establishing and using Red Hat solutions.IDC used the following three-s

161、tep method for conducting the ROI analysis:1.Gathered quantitative benefit information during the interviews using a before-and-after assessment of the impact of using Red Hat solutions to develop and run various business applications and workloads.In this study,the benefits included staff time savi

162、ngs and productivity benefits,revenue gains,and IT infrastructurerelated cost reductions.2.Created a complete investment(three-year,total-cost analysis)profile based on the interviews.Investments go beyond the initial and annual costs of using Red Hat solutions and can include additional costs relat

163、ed to migrations,planning,consulting,and staff or user training.3.Calculated the ROI and payback period.IDC conducted a depreciated cash-flow analysis of the benefits and investments for the organizations use of Red Hat solutions over a three-year period.ROI is the ratio of the net present value(NPV

164、)and the discounted investment.The payback period is the point at which cumulative benefits equal the initial investment.IDC bases the payback period and ROI calculations on a number of assumptions,which are summarized as follows:Time values are multiplied by burdened salary(salary+28%for benefits a

165、nd overhead)to quantify efficiency and manager productivity savings.For purposes of this analysis,based on the geographic locations of the interviewed organizations,IDC has used assumptions of an average,fully loaded$100,000 per year salary for IT staff members,and an average,fully loaded salary of$

167、values are a product of the number of hours of downtime multiplied by the number of users affected.The impact of unplanned downtime is quantified in terms of impaired end-user productivity and lost revenue.Lost productivity is a product of downtime multiplied by burdened salary.The net present value

168、 of the three-year savings is calculated by subtracting the amount that would have been realized by investing the original sum in an instrument yielding a 12%return to allow for the missed opportunity cost.This accounts for both the assumed cost of money and the assumed rate of return.Because every

169、hour of downtime does not equate to a lost hour of productivity or revenue generation,IDC attributes only a fraction of the result to savings.As part of our assessment,we asked each interviewed organization what fraction of downtime hours to use in calculating productivity savings and the reduction

170、in lost revenue.IDC then taxes the revenue at that rate.Further,because IT solutions require a deployment period,the full benefits of the solution are not available during deployment.To capture this reality,IDC prorates the benefits on a monthly basis and then subtracts the deployment time from the
