、ld a similar passion,we have teamed up with NAMAC to deliver this report. It combines LARRYS LISTs knowledge of art collectors with the scientific data research capabilities of NAMAC.Our aim is to investigate the relationship between contemporary art collectors and post-1970s artists on Instagram to
、reveal any trends related to the amount of attention received by artists from art collectors on the platform. Our main inquiry,as such,is“Which artists are receiving the most attention on Instagram from the art collector community?”After exploring this concept from a global perspective,we then break
、down the analysis to major regional art markets, specifically the US,Greater China and the UK.Through the data provided by NAMAC,we analyse the apparent trends what do all the top attention-receiving artists have in common?and then explore the similarities and differences across the regional markets.
、Finally,we discuss the possibilities that such research may hold beyond this report for different players in the global art market.Foreword by NAMAC NAMAC is a specialised provider of art market trend data.Trends in the art market are social constructs generated by reputable actors in the field of a
、rt.Therefore,in order to detect trends at the earliest possible stage, one must know which artists are getting how much attention from whom over time.NAMAC developed a unique global digital map of all relevant individuals and institutions in the art world.Using modern network theory,we assigned each
、person and institution our proprietary Art Market Importance Score(AMIS).The AMIS allows to give more weight to attention paid by more influential people and institutions in the global art market. We create unique artist-specific attention indices that reveal how much attention an artist is receiving
、 from important people and institutions in the global art market. In this report,we analyse the attention given by art collectors. Each of our analyses are tailor-made for every client and application.Methodology In this study,we investigate the relationship between 100 dynamic contemporary artists(as
、 per our definition below)active in the global art market and known collectors of contemporary art.We take Instagram as our medium of analysis.Perhaps the most relevant tool of the art world today,Instagram is where artists and collectors come together to find, support and connect free of any physica
、l boundaries or time constraints.Anecdotal evidence collected via our active Instagram account,larrys_list,suggests that, more than ever, both artists and collectors are coming online to conduct business and Instagram is their preferred place of interaction.Confirming this, the Hiscox 2019 Report by Ar
、tTactic found that 65%of survey respondents preferred Instagram as their social media platform of choice for“art-related purposes,”a statistic that has been steadily increasing over the years, and that 67%said that social media“posts by artists and their studio had the biggest influence when buying a
、n artwork.”As such, what happens on Instagram is impactful in the real world and can contribute to an artists career.Using NAMACs research,we analysed the profiles of our chosen 100 artists to see how much attention collectors were paying them via likes on their posts over an 11-month time span from
、June of 2020 through to April of 2021.Our focus is exclusively on collectors as the area of LARRYS LIST expertise and interest,as described in the foreword. The data collected by NAMAC shows who received the most interaction from collectors and how this number has changed month-by-month throughout th
、is period.By exploring collector likes over time,we gain a dynamic understanding of the attention received. This is what is most valuable from the research.A static impression, which could be generated by listing which collectors follow which artists, would only show a single moment in time, rather than
、 produce a trend line that demonstrates any fluctuations in attention received, which is exactly what our dynamic approach provides.Who are the collectors? The basis of the study is a list of over 1,000 contemporary art collectors from around the globe, who all have Instagram accounts complied from the
、 LARRYS LIST art collector database.4 To be included, the collector account needed to be personal and active;we did not include any private museum or foundation accounts, any accounts that appeared incomplete(i.e.,no profile image,no posts),or any accounts that had not posted at least once in the past
、 12 months. In total, the collectors represent 67 nationalities. The majority are American collectors who make up 27.8%,followed by those from the United Kingdom(10.0%),Germany(6.0%),Greater China(5.0%)and France(4.9%).Importantly,in this study, each collector is given equal weight.5 Who are the artists
、?We chose to analyse the Instagram accounts of 100 artists, who are present in the art market. Each name was chosen upon the following criteria:Must be born after 1970 and living Must have been included in a major auction houses contemporary art day and/or evening sales during the first quarter of 202
、1 Must have a public and operational Instagram account with a minimum of 15,000 followers6The resulting list is a compilation of social media-savvy contemporary artists present in the art market, and the focus of this study. To break down this cohort,40%are female and 60%are male.ily need to collect c
、ontemporary art exclusively),owns a substantial number of works and has had their status as a collector confirmed by at least two independent, publicly available sources such as collector interviews, talks at an art fair, etc. However, there may be cases where not all criteria are met.5.This is justified
、 because the differences in the Art Market Importance Scores(AMIS)by NAMAC of those 1,200 collectors is minimal.6.Surprisingly,some popular artists with high auction prices do not necessarily hold a large Instagram following or even have a functioning account. As such, some names that may be expected
、are not included in this study. Why Measure the Attention Artists Receive?A fundamental issue in the art market is the uncertainty about the development and career of an unknown or uprising artist. Are they on the right track to have a successful career? Are they worth supporting? There is the theory th
、at such uncertainty can be reduced by the conferring of reputation from experts in the field of art, like well-known collectors, curators, critics, etc.,to the artist.1 That is to say,the more attention an artist receives from established art market experts, the less uncertainty exists about this artist.
、Furthermore,as revealed through the academic research of Jan Serwart,2 the founder of NAMAC,less uncertainty about an artist is associated with higher prices for that artist within the secondary market.3 The relationship can be visualised as:More attention Less Uncertainty Higher PricesAs for the ar
、tists chosen mediums,82%work in painting(70%exclusively so),11%produce sculpture,another 11%produce installations,4%are photographers,3%make art films and the remainder create either ceramics,calligraphy or internet art.The artists represent 28 nationalities,with 48%being American,10%British,7%Frenc
、h,6%Japanese,4%Spanish,3%German and 3%South African. How to measure the attention artists receive? The study poses the question,“Which artists are receiving the most attention on Instagram from the art collector community, both globally and regionally?”To find the answer, every Instagram post of each of
、 the chosen 100 artists over the 11-month period was investigated to find out which of the 1,000 collectors,if any, gave the post a“like”.Instagram stories were not included in the analysis, nor were comments, follows or shares. The data was then tallied up to create an overall picture of the engagement
、 each artist received from each collector as a monthly numerical value. Then, the collector list was broken down into locations and additional sets of tallies were made based upon collectors residing in the United States, the United Kingdom and Greater China. To ensure no unfair advantage was given to a
、rtists who post daily compared to those who post less frequently,we counted only one interaction per month on each artist profile from each collector regardless of whether they liked multiple posts during those 30 days. For a fair comparison, this procedure requires that each artist posts at least onc
、e per month, which was true for a great majority of the artists throughout the chosen period. For example, one of the analysed artists,Emily Mae Smith, posted six times throughout April of 2021.During this month, four different collectors liked every single. However,Smith only received one interaction poi
、nt from each of those collectors for April, not six points each. The same occurred for those collectors who liked five out six posts, four out of six posts and so on,while Smith did not receive any interaction points at all from those collectors who did not like any of her posts from April. Then, these i
、nteractions were tallied up collectively for the global listing, while only the points belonging to collectors based in the US,UK or Greater China were counted for the respective regional market analyses.Analysis By analysing the interactions of art collectors with our curated list of post-1970s arti
、sts active in the market,we can make some observations. What are the demographics of the most interacted-with artists worldwide? What do they have in common? Is this list any different to the most interreacted-with artists in regional markets? And can we make any predictions based on the data?Taking a w

、f the top ten are from the United States.Considering that the majority of the art market is based in the US 42%of sales by value to be precise7 along with a broad and well-established infrastructure of support for both emerging and established artists, the popularity of American artists may reflect t
、he USA as a more mature, more expansive and more dominating art market. An additional influencing factor may be the composition of both collectors and artists within the list of analysed Instagram accounts. The largest percentage of collectors(27.8%)are American, and almost half of the artists are based
、 in the US.Given the home bias of many collectors, meaning their tendency to favour artists of their own nationality,8 a higher percentage of American artists as top attention receivers is reasonably expected.Second, the majority are male.A 2019 study by Artnet News and In Other Words into the positio
、n of women in the artworld revealed that female artists made up only 2%of sales by value in worldwide auction results from 2008 to 2019.9 Although on an upwards trend, with female artists comprising 8%of the value of sales in the auction market in 2020,the market is still heavily dominated by male ar
、tists.10 The results of this study mirror this gender imbalance.Third, all the artists in the top ten produce paintings, with only KAWS extending his practice to include sculpture.Perhaps this medium is most suitable for presentation on Instagram, whereas other art forms practised by the chosen 100 art
、ists(installation, photography, film, ceramics, calligraphy, internet art)may not translate as well or as attractively to an Instagram post.It may also be an indication of market demand, with collectors preferring paintings above all else.Fourth, the majority of the global top attention receivers have more
、 than 50,000 Instagram followers. This demonstrates that the global market prefers those artists who are already at least somewhat established,as indicated by a relatively higher level of celebrity measured by the number of followers on the platform. However, this does not imply that the artists with t
、he highest followings also receive the most attention from art collectors.Case in point,KAWS,who outperforms the other artists in the list by millions in terms of follower count, only ranks at number eight.Notably, some of the most popular artists on Instagram from our list, such as Mr Doodle(2.7 milli
、on followers),Daniel Arsham(1.1 million followers)and Kehinde Wiley(518 thousand followers),do not make it into the global top ten at all(although some appear in regional lists). It should be acknowledged that there is a natural relation between the number of followers and the overall number of likes
、 for any Instagram account. Therefore,it is unsurprising to see those artists with higher followerships gaining more likes. However, for the purpose of this study,it is the interaction received from collectors, and not the number of followers(collector or otherwise),that is of interest. As such,we do not

、erican art collectors preferences for American artists. From this,we can say that within the US market,American artists have an advantage in so far as they receive greater attention from American collectors, and thereby develop their reputation more easily than artists from other regions.14While the m
、arket for art in China is sizeable and social media is also a widely popular tool for communication and interaction, the numbers presented here are low. This is most likely because localised social media platforms such as WeChat have a greater appeal than Instagram for a variety of factors ranging fro
、m native language to ease of access.Consequently, both Chinese collectors and Chinese artists may be more active on other platforms. This would explain the lower interaction numbers received by the artists. Moreover, the minimal difference of just one or two points between each spot in the list reduces
、the meaning of ranking the artists, since they are all essentially as popular as one another. That said, the names that make the top ten Greater China attention receivers list still reveal much about the preferences of Chinese collectors as they express themselves through interactions on Instagram.Top

、 one-fifth of the US list.Evidently, the UK has a growing appreciation for female artists, with more women than men winning the Turner Prize over the past ten years and, within the same time frame, the UK pavilion at the Venice Biennale sharing the spotlight equally between female and male artists.12 Al
、so,more than half of the UKs top ten attention-receiving artists have less than 50k Instagram followers, which is the same as the Greater China list, and significantly more than the global and US lists.Notably, the ranking reveals that the UK market does not show any clear home bias.Only two UK-based a
、rtists made the list with the vast majority of artists being American. The Value of This ResearchThe presented findings demonstrate how thoroughly and continuously analysing artist attention data on Instagram can reveal trends in the art market(s)and potentially expose patterns that may otherwise be
、recognised only much later.Given the positive connection between received attention and realised art prices in the secondary market for artists, analysing attention data is useful for a number of reasons. For example, collectors seeking to sell or buy specific artworks of an artist may watch for trends
、 in the attention rate of that artist as an indication for the development of their market price.Auction houses may use the same information to optimally advise consignors with respect to the timing of a sale or for their own business activities.Since NAMACs tool is useful for gaining insight into t
、he trending artists of the day, galleries may use it to scout for artists on the rise with respect to received attention. They may also better judge when to increase an artists prices based on growing attention and therefore reputation. Moreover, for artists, there is the potential to find and connect wi
、th collectors who already have established relationships with other similar artists. For example, thinking again about the top attention-giving collectors of Rashid Johnson,it may be that they have a strong interest in established conceptual artists, artists of the African diaspora and/or artists who c
