12、 is still widely misunderstood.Emboldened by ageism,sexism and a healthcare system that is often clueless about a natural aspect of life,perimenopause and its definition,symptoms and solutions remains largely a mystery.Now is the time to shine a light on its future.Perimenopause is defined as the ti
13、me leading up to the menopause,when oestrogen,progesterone and testosterone levels in the body rise and fall sporadically while gradually declining.During this stage,the ovaries prepare to stop releasing eggs entirely,slowing down the reproductive system until one reaches the menopause the diagnosis
14、 marking a year since ones last period.Lasting from a few months to 10 years,the onset of the perimenopause much like puberty marks a hormonal transition for the body,and one that can cause a range of symptoms.These can span the physical,the mental and the social,from erratic periods,hot flushes,sle
15、ep issues and headaches to mood swings,drops in libido,memory lapses and difficulty speaking.Its 2022,and a pivotal,unavoidable,universal womens life stage is still widely misunderstood.PAGE 12Despite the life-altering changes that can be brought on by the perimenopause,the lack of education,underst
16、anding and communication surrounding the transition are leaving all who experience this life stage including women,women-identifying people,trans men and non-binary people shockingly unprepared.Research from Wild Nutrition1 confirms this knowledge chasm with over one third(36%)not knowing what perim
17、enopause is,and one third(33%)not understanding the difference between this stage and the menopause.But a shift is underway.2022 is the year of perimenopause,says GP and perimenopause and menopause specialist Dr Shahzadi Harper.It is the first time we are truly understanding it as its own entity,sep
18、arately from menopause.Research from Avon2 reveals the need for change.Almost half of women surveyed in a global study did not expect the perimenopause(46%)or were unaware of its existence at all(44%),while one-third(34%)did not understand differences between this stage and the menopause,despite cur
19、rently being in one or the other.Misdiagnosis and scientific ignorance are repeatedly shutting women out of a life stage they should feel empowered to claim as their own.Many are left to suffer unnecessarily as they scramble for external methods to fix the symptoms of a diagnosis,rather than having
20、the informed foresight to work alongside their bodies as a new life stage approaches.A 2021 study commissioned by the UK government3 shows that of the 70%of those that experienced perimenopausal symptoms in their 30s and 40s,nine in 10(90%)failed to recognise the immediate link to their fluctuating
21、and declining hormones,instead attributing symptoms to ageing,stress,anxiety or depression.Notably,the misunderstandings surrounding perimenopause run deeper than self-diagnosis and Dr Google searches.A study conducted by Newson Health Research and Education4 reveals that a third of women waited at

37、terest in the nuances between the two halting in line with a biased system that marks these transitions as simply the end of a womans fertility or a disease in need of a cure.In recent years,communication or lack thereof has done little to reframe the reality of perimenopause as a universal moment o

90、ith their partner,while a similar figure(25%)would resist bringing it up at work through fear of ageism.Instead,women are finding solace in reciprocal kinship and peer-to-peer support,whether sharing stories at physical events,entering safe online spaces or simply recognising that every person in an
91、 audience is experiencing or will experience the same life stage as you.Its beginning:a wave of this same culture of full disclosure and boundary-breaking sharing is building with my generation,writes teacher Lisa Wathen.I am hopeful that by the time my daughter reaches her peri years,none of it wil
92、l be a surprise to her,and shell be able to take it for granted that she can talk about whats going on and tap into that sisterhood of support she enjoyed 30 years earlier.Offering the ability to embed a culture of education,openness and inclusivity into the family,the workplace and wider society,th

94、 an invaluable group without certified policies or safe spaces needed to feel supported in work environments as their bodies enter a period of flux.Research from GenM8 reveals this clash between workplace success and a natural life stage.The study shows that almost all respondents(90%)who claim thei
95、r career was on a high when they began the perimenopause say they felt unprepared,while more than three quarters(83%)say they knew nothing about it,and over half(55%)claim its onset made them feel invisible.Women are repeatedly leaving jobs or not going up for promotions because they feel like they
96、cant cope labelling it as just not being good enough,getting old or not being able to compete,explains Laura Biggs.This lack of understanding and support is devastating for both women and the economy.Were at risk of losing an entire generations wisdom and knowledge.The parameters of womens health ex
97、tend far beyond the personal sphere having a direct impact on their professional lives and choices.A survey of 2,000 employees and 500 business owners conducted by Benenden Health9 found that almost a quarter(23%)of women who had been unwell because of the menopause have left jobs,even though nearly
98、 all businesses polled(95%)recognised that symptoms could negatively affect work.These statistics may paint a damning picture of the relationship between menopause and work.But they also illuminate a missing piece PAGE 36at the centre of the puzzle,with the ability to change perceptions and,in turn,
99、workplace outcomes.Enter the perimenopause.At present,employers policies fail to view this life stage distinctively,if at all often combining both in a single diagnosis that fails to recognise the length of time or nuances associated with the life stage.While flexible policies or workplace advocates

118、formative reframing of language that enables women to redefine perimenopause away from its association with the latter menopause stage.I think the hardest barrier to education and understanding is language,she explains.A person in their 40s today feels completely different from how our grandmothers,
119、or even our mothers,ever did and its hard to get them to listen to a word like perimenopause.We need to rethink the lexicon and come up with a new word,a word that allows 40-year-old women to embrace the stage to get the wellness solutions that they need.This renaming has the potential to allow wome
120、n to reframe,and more importantly reclaim,this life stage in line with their own experiences.By 2032,then,society could rename this stage to sit in line with perimenopauses new cultural and social definition.This new name will encompass matter-of-fact science that debunks mysticism,but will also be

130、positively shared to help others,could represent a new frontier in health and wellbeing highlighting the transformative possibilities for the future of the perimenopause experience.SECTION B|COMMUNITY CARE(iiii)Inclusive Experiences Perimenopause may be a universal womens life stage but its not a un
131、iversal experience.For people of colour,its understanding,symptoms and treatment follow the wider trajectory of healthcare discrimination leaving groups disproportionately affected by the natural transition.The need to strive for understanding and acknowledgment of the perimenopause is even more imp
132、ortant when considering the intersections of race and healthcare.Medical professionals are often dismissive of Black patients symptoms taking the same symptoms more seriously for their white counterparts.Women of colour often go to the doctor and the doctor says:Oh,no,youre too young for menopause,e
133、xplains Denise Pines.They want you to grind it out,and women walk away with nothing.Or they assume patients cant afford hormone replacement therapy or other solutions.Such trajectories remain commonplace for womens later life stage experiences,despite the perimenopause having longer and more debilit
134、ating repercussions for people of colour.Recent research from the Study of Womens Health Across the Nation11(SWAN)confirms this reality,revealing that in the US,menopause-related hot flushes and night sweats last for 6.5 years in non-Hispanic white women,8.9 years in Latinx women and 10.1 years in B
135、lack women on average.Self-education and holistic lifestyles will not be the cure for biased healthcare systems.But it should be noted that the realities of systemic racism ranging from restricted healthcare access to unsafe housing,toxic workplaces PAGE 46and socio-economic challenges can stress ho
136、rmones and fuel chronic inflammation.It is imperative,then,that urgent community support and education go hand-in-hand with the extensive task of achieving healthcare equality and reform.Notably,the intersection of socio-economic class and this life stage must also be considered particularly where e
